What Is Wharton's Jelly?
Wharton's Jelly is the connective tissue found within the human umbilical cord. Its natural biological composition has made umbilical-cord tissue and its components an area of considerable interest in regenerative-medicine research.
Products derived from donated birth tissue vary significantly in their processing, composition, intended use and regulatory status. They should therefore not be assumed to be equivalent products.
Why Is It Used in Our Practice?
Our interest in regenerative approaches is based on supporting the body's natural biological environment and recovery processes — not promising to replace damaged tissue or cure a disease.
When appropriate, a regenerative product may be considered as one component of a broader plan that can also address inflammation, movement, strength, mechanical stress and other factors that may influence recovery.
What About Exosomes?
Exosomes are small extracellular vesicles involved in cell-to-cell communication and are an active area of biomedical research.
Some regenerative products are marketed using terms such as exosomes, extracellular vesicles or secretome. These terms should not be assumed to mean the same thing, and product composition can vary.
Importantly, there are currently no FDA-approved exosome products. For that reason, we do not present exosomes as an FDA-approved treatment for joint pain or other orthopedic conditions.
Evaluation Before Recommendation
Not every patient is an appropriate candidate for every procedure.
Recommendations are based on the patient's history, examination findings, goals, available diagnostic information and consideration of reasonable alternatives.
When another type of care or referral is more appropriate, that should be part of the conversation as well.
