Sleep Apnea: Why Nighttime Breathing Problems Shouldn't Be Ignored

You go to bed expecting your body to rest and recover. But for people with obstructive sleep apnea, breathing can repeatedly become disrupted during sleep—sometimes without the person realizing it.

Sleep apnea isn't just about snoring or feeling tired the next day. Repeated interruptions in breathing can affect oxygen levels, sleep quality, and place additional stress on the cardiovascular system.

Common warning signs may include loud or persistent snoring, waking up gasping or choking, witnessed pauses in breathing, morning headaches, dry mouth, and excessive daytime fatigue.

When these symptoms are present, appropriate evaluation for obstructive sleep apnea is important.


What Happens When Breathing Is Interrupted During Sleep

In obstructive sleep apnea, the upper airway repeatedly becomes narrowed or blocked during sleep. These episodes can reduce airflow and cause oxygen levels to fall, prompting the brain to briefly arouse the body so normal breathing can resume.

During these repeated episodes:

  • Oxygen levels may decrease

  • Heart rate and blood pressure can fluctuate

  • Normal sleep cycles may be repeatedly interrupted

  • The body's stress-response systems can become activated

These events may occur many times throughout the night, often without the person remembering that they awakened.

Over time, untreated obstructive sleep apnea has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, including high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, stroke, and heart disease.

This is why persistent snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, or significant daytime sleepiness should not simply be ignored.


REM Sleep and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

REM sleep is an important stage of sleep associated with dreaming, memory processing, and normal brain function. During REM sleep, muscle tone naturally decreases.

For some people with obstructive sleep apnea, this reduction in muscle tone can contribute to greater narrowing or collapse of the upper airway. As a result:

  • Breathing interruptions may become more frequent or prolonged

  • Oxygen levels may fall more significantly

  • Snoring and breathing disturbances may worsen

  • Sleep may become increasingly fragmented

The severity of sleep apnea can vary considerably throughout the night and from person to person. For some individuals, breathing disturbances are more pronounced during REM sleep.

This is another reason that symptoms such as loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, nighttime gasping, or excessive daytime fatigue deserve appropriate evaluation rather than being dismissed as simply poor sleep.


Intermittent Oxygen Drops and Why They Matter

Obstructive sleep apnea can cause repeated decreases in blood oxygen levels as breathing becomes partially or completely interrupted during sleep.

This recurring pattern of reduced oxygen followed by reoxygenation can place stress on the body and has been associated with:

  • Increased oxidative stress and inflammation

  • Changes in blood pressure

  • Increased cardiovascular stress

  • Disturbances in normal heart-rate regulation

The frequency and severity of these oxygen changes can vary considerably depending on the severity of the sleep apnea.

Over time, untreated obstructive sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of several cardiovascular and metabolic health problems.

Because a person may be unaware that these breathing and oxygen changes are occurring during sleep, persistent symptoms or witnessed breathing interruptions warrant appropriate evaluation.


So What Can You Actually Do About It?

If obstructive sleep apnea is suspected, the first step is appropriate evaluation and diagnosis. Depending on the individual, treatment may include CPAP, oral appliance therapy, lifestyle changes, surgery, or other approaches recommended by a qualified healthcare provider.

But sleep apnea is not the only reason someone may struggle with nighttime breathing.

Chronic nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, and mouth breathing can also affect how comfortably someone breathes and sleeps. These concerns deserve their own evaluation.

This is where evaluating nasal breathing—and determining what may be contributing to the obstruction— becomes important.


Where Cranial Facial Release May Fit

Cranial Facial Release (CFR) is a specialized balloon-assisted endonasal technique. During the procedure, a small balloon is carefully introduced into specific areas of the nasal passage and briefly inflated before being deflated and removed.
